In a news release, Chickie’s and Pete’s said it will pay the tolls for drivers on the Atlantic City Expressway from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 24. The restaurant known for its "Crabfries" will cover eastbound tolls at the Egg Harbor Toll Plaza.
The "Free Toll Friday" event begins with an outdoor "100 Days of Summer Party" at the nearby Frank S. Farley Service Plaza from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
""Free Toll Friday" is one of my favorite summertime traditions," Chickie’s & Pete’s chair and CEO Pete Ciarrocchi said in a statement. "It’s a great way to thank all those who have supported us over the years and kick off the summer in a fun way. It also signifies the official start to summer!"
Chickie’s & Pete’s also said it's partnering with The Patriot Fund to honor veterans on Memorial Day. The group helps vets with financial, social, and emotional support after returning from duty.
Ciarrocchi said he chose Memorial Day weekend for "Free Toll Friday" as a tribute to his family’s military history.
"My dad and my uncles were all in the military," he said. "In fact, my uncle George, who was my restaurant mentor, won the Silver Star [Medal] for bravery. He was quite the guy, and I couldn't think of a better way to honor him."
More than 60 businesses, vendors, and artists will be set up at the Farley rest area for the party. Kids can also meet animals from the Funny Farm Rescue sanctuary.
Chickie’s & Pete’s will donate a portion of Memorial Day weekend proceeds from its "Patriot Punch" cocktail to The Patriot Fund.
